Guide to Bed Sizes

Beds are usually labelled according to the dimensions of the mattress - the actual size of the bed might be a little wider and/or longer. In the United States, mattresses are, as a general rule, wider than their counterparts in other parts of the world. However, with the exception of mattresses used in the United Kingdom and Australia, mattresses in the rest of the world tend to be slightly longer than US mattresses. An important exception to the "wider in the US" rule is the size of beds in hotels. Many hotels offer rooms with beds they call "King Size" but which are significantly narrower to individuals accustomed to sleeping in a "Standard King."

When you look for various bed sizes you are generally asking for its dimensions and the names for the various standard sizes. It is quite customary to label certain sizes with different names and for such names to be common among various countries. Some common names include single, double, king, and queen sizes. As a precaution, you should not expect that a twin bed or single bed in North America to have exactly the same dimensions as the ones for European countries. That is especially true for queen size bed dimensions in various countries.

If you travel a lot to various countries then comparing different bed size sizes should be a concern for you. Since there is no international standard sizes for different sized beds you should put this into consideration when looking for a place to stay in your destination. US Queen Size Bed Dimensions

Queen sized beds are quite popular since they offer enough room for two people to sleep in. A couple can get enough sleeping space and twist and turn into the night. US queen size bed dimensions do not only come in a standard size but there are also other novelty sizes that you might become interested in.

A standard US queen bed will have dimensions as 60 by 80 inches, which is its width by its length. That’s 30 inches of space per person for a couple sleeping in this bed size. A novelty size provided by Simmons is the Olympic Queen with dimensions of 66 by 80 inches. This is designed to have a wider sleeping space for many couples. Another variant of the queen bed is the California Queen with dimensions of 60 by 84 inches, which obviously is a solution for people who are taller than most.

Europe and UK Queen Size Bed Dimensions

If ever you’re in the UK or Ireland you’ll be surprised that they have a bit of a shorter version of a queen bed. Queen beds here will have dimensions of 60 by 78 inches, which is just a couple of inches shorter than the US standard size. The rest of Europe will have a wider yet slightly longer queen sized bed. They will have dimensions of 63 by 79 inches.

Australian Queen Size Bed Dimensions

The Australian queen beds follow suit with the American standard size of 60” x 80”.

Asian Queen Beds

Unfortunately there are no standard queen beds in Asia. However, if you check in on a hotel they will have one prepared for you beforehand. So, for instance you pay a visit to Hong Kong or any other Asian country for that matter, you should call and ask for their bed sizes. If you require a larger bed most hotels will be happy to make the arrangements for you.
